February 20 & 21 was the 87th Annual SCYA Midwinter Regatta held in over two dozen venues from Ventura to San Diego, with 100 classes represented, the rumor is that Our Martin 242 Class with 11 boats was the largest Keelboat One Design Class in the Area. California Yacht Club and Race Committee did a fabulous job running the event on the water and the land with three races on Saturday and two on Sunday. Both days were sunny with breezes variable, building in the afternoon to 10-12 knots for some very tight racing. Trolly Car set the standard, dominating the event with their exceptional crew who alternated helming, showing excellent boat handling, tactics and strategy by a crew that has put in their time racing sailboats. It was exciting to see a new fleet member, Jim Barber helming Rosa, jump out and win the first race! Harumi, helmed by Jeff Butterworth, another new fleet member, made a strong showing on Saturday. We hope to see more of you Ryan! Denise George and her gorgeous crew blasted out of the blocks winning race #2 handily. Ryan Costello and team, representing SCYC, traveled all the way from Venice, CA to helm Strange Crew deftly into third place. After a punishing first race, Mark Sands and crew came back with four excellent races, including a win in race #4 to take home a well deserved second place finish. For all who witnessed , we demonstrated fine corinthian sportsmanship with no protests and welcoming camaraderie, What a great start to 2016.
